RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BLUEBERRIES OF INDIANA
Announcement! After 73 years, BLUEBERRIES of INDIANA (Mainland’s Blueberries) will not be owned by the Mainland family in 2021.
It is with sadness I make this announcement. Providing the best blueberries possible under the most pleasant conditions has been our goal. Fullfilling this goal has been a “labor of love” and will be sorely missed. However, with advancing age, 83, and a back surgery with limited success in December it has become impossible to build on these goals. It will be up to others to continue what we established.
A heartfelt THANKS! goes to all our loyal customers. Also, it was with the effort and management skills of Judy and the late Bob Klosinski along with their children that allowed the farm to continue while I was in North Carolina. In more recent times, Lonnie Couchman and his family have provided management.
All the best wishes to the friends of Blueberries of Indiana and the new owners, Dean and Diane Ott.
Charles M. “Mike” Mainland
There is a good crop in 2021. Recent rains preceded by irrigation have allowed the berries to reach maximum size. It is good to call about weather and picking conditions (219) 326-8686. We have often gotten questions about when picking is best. Typically picking is poorest by Sunday afternoon after a weekend of good weather. It improves throughout the week as more berries ripen NOTE! Sanitation regulations do not allow dogs.
Map and directions are farther down. Be sure to check on new practices in 2021.
From I94: We are on County Road 1000 North just 4 miles from LaPorte Rd. exit of I94 (first exit in Michigan and exit for Four Winds Casino). From the Indiana Toll Road (I80&90): turn right (north) on Hwy 39 and go about 6 miles to County Road 1000 N. Turn left and go 1.3 miles to the farm.
